Most burglaries occur between 10 AM and 3PM (after most people leave for work and before kids get home from school)

The typical house burglar is a male teenager who lives within a couple of Klm's of your home. The chance of being victimized by a professional thief is low. Frequent entry points for home burglaries are windows and garage doors. If it takes more than a few minutes to pry open a door or window, the burglar often gives up.

Burglars spend an average of 8 to 12 minutes in your home. The master bedroom is usually the first place hit because most people keep their valuables there. Their favorite items to steal are: cash, jewelry, electronic equipment, silver, guns and other items that are easy to sell on the street or "hock" at a pawnshop.

TYPE OF ALARM TRANSMISSION METHODS

DIGITAL DIALLERS - Dialers incorporated in the alarm panel use the normal telephone service to transmit alarm signals to a special dialer receiving computer which receives and decodes the message. Hundreds of different messages can identify security alarms from all areas of the premises, system maintenance type alarms, and communications test reports. Each report sent represents a local telephone call cost to the client phone account.
By fitting a dialer to your local siren system, response is assured via the CENTRAL SECURITY LINK. Available wherever a PSTN phone service is available.

SECURITEL- This a dedicated security network provided by Telstra for use of by approved security companies for monitoring of alarms with a need for HIGH END SECURITY.
Securitel is enabled by Telstra overlaid on your existing telephone line, without interfering with normal use of the telephone in any way.
The presence of the alarm is continuously transmitted to CMS via duplicated transmission paths. Any cuts, line breaks or faults are monitored thus providing the added Security.
The alarm message is sent over the phone without making a call and therefore no additional telephone costs are incurred each time an alarm or system on/off message is sent.
Securitel is a registered Telstra product and is available in major cities and centres around Australia.

GSM - This is transmission of security over the GSM Network. GSM networks are "Global Systems for Mobile Communications" and are provided in Australia by all the major Telecommunications Companies. Suppliers of security alarm panels provide interfaces so that the panel can use the GSM network as a primary or secondary method of communication to the monitoring centre.
These digital networks provide many communication services and the security alarm transmission shares with other digital traffic. Used as a backup to a digital dialler it serves as a cost effective, improved security service. Care needs to be taken with the location of the "mobile phone" which sends the alarm to ensure local signal strength, network congestion, interference to signals with "dropouts" and normal commercial arrangements with mobile phone bills. Mobile phone plans established with the Telco will establish the call costs. The service is available on GSM coverage maps available from the Telco.

FACTS:
Across Australia between July 1996 and June 2004, 412 people were killed in 366 fatal residential fires. In the cases where it was known whether smoke alarms were installed, 14% had a non-working alarm and 55% had no alarm at all.

  • NSW Fire Brigade research indicates that a third to a half of house fire deaths could be avoided by having a working smoke alarm and a practised escape plan.
  • Most fatal fires happen at night, when people are usually asleep, and they’re most common in winter.
  • The majority of fatal fires are caused by electrical faults, smoking materials such as cigarette ash, or heaters and open fires.
  • Smoke alarms help limit the damage and cost caused by fires, by detecting them earlier.

Smoke alarms are mandatory in all newly constructed or substantially renovated homes. For new homes, the smoke alarms must be mains-powered (with battery back-ups in case of power failure), so they need to be installed by an electrician. Generally you should have more than one and they should be interconnected so that if one goes off, so do the rest, maximising the chances of alerting everyone in the house. The alarms must comply with the requirements of the Australian Standard AS 3786.

In addition to new homes, smoke alarms are also required in all existing homes in the following states:

  • NSW (from 1 May 2006)                                                   Queensland (from 1 July 2007).
  • South Australia                                                                 Victoria

For existing homes, the alarms don’t need to be mains-powered; battery-powered models are acceptable, as long as they meet the Australian standard. Check with your local fire brigade; it can give advice about the laws that apply in your state
